Blog > Scottsdale's Hidden Speakeasies: A Local's Guide for 85250 Residents
One of my favorite things to tell out-of-state buyers is that Scottsdale has a genuinely excellent hidden speakeasy scene — the kind of unmarked-door, ask-for-the-password experience most people associate with cities like Chicago or New York. It's a fun surprise for people who picture Scottsdale as resort pools and golf courses and nothing else.
Several of the best speakeasies in the city are close to home if you're in 85250. Here's where to look.
The Goose: Right in McCormick Ranch, Inside 85250
The Goose is the speakeasy I point clients to most often, simply because of where it sits — inside McCormick Ranch, in the heart of the 85250 area. Named after a Prohibition-era tradition of naming covert bars after geese spotted near Marguerite Lake nearby, The Goose leans fully into its hidden, old-world theme.
The cocktail program is built around upscale, avian-themed drinks — the Take a Gander, made with Japanese whisky, plum sake, pomegranate tea syrup, and yuzu, is a popular order, along with a tropical rhum-and-mezcal Landing Strip. For something more indulgent, The Goose offers an Osetra caviar and vodka pairing for two, playfully called Goose Bumps, along with shareable bites like tangerine spiced olives and rustic pizzettas. Art deco-inspired decor and a deliberately anonymous-feeling location complete the speakeasy atmosphere.
For 85250 residents, having a legitimate, well-reviewed speakeasy essentially in the neighborhood is a rare and genuine perk.
Straight Up: Hidden Inside a Telephone Booth
Straight Up, located inside Hotel Adeline, takes the hidden-entrance concept literally — guests access this whiskey-focused speakeasy through a vintage telephone booth tucked inside the hotel's Social Boardroom. It's Scottsdale's dedicated whiskey lounge, with flights organized by region so you can taste your way through different whiskey styles, plus a pour of Whiskey Del Bac, an award-winning Arizona-distilled single malt with a distinctive mesquite-smoked profile.
It's a short drive from 85250 and a popular choice for guests who want a true "find the secret door" experience.
Tell Your Friends: 1920s Glamour North of Fashion Square
Tell Your Friends, located beneath The Americano just north of Kierland Commons, channels full Prohibition-era glamour — live jazz, signature cocktails like the champagne-and-vodka Flapper Fizz, and a Punch Bowl option designed for groups of four to six that's become a popular choice for celebrations. It's accessible via two flights of stairs and requires an online reservation, adding to the exclusivity.
It's a bit further north than 85250, but it's a regular recommendation for clients planning a special night out.
The Madam: Behind a Bookshelf, Hidden in Plain Sight
The Madam, located at The Scottsdale Resort & Spa on Hayden Road — close to the 85250 area — is accessed through a hidden door disguised as a bookshelf inside the resort's Social Boardroom. The small, dimly lit space seats only eight guests at a time, making reservations essential. The menu focuses on artisanal cocktails and small bites like miniature crab cakes and truffle parmesan fries, all wrapped in a Prohibition-era aesthetic.
The Beverly: Old Town's Classic Hidden Bar
Inside Citizen Public House in Old Town Scottsdale, The Beverly offers one of the city's most consistently recommended speakeasy experiences — an unmarked door, no signage, leather booths, and dim lighting that all add to the sense of discovery. The cocktail menu includes local favorites like the Mezcal Mule and the Bacon Bourbon Manhattan.
Why This Matters Beyond the Fun Factor
I bring up the speakeasy scene with clients for a simple reason: it's a good proxy for a neighborhood's overall sophistication and growth. Hidden bars with this level of design investment and cocktail expertise don't show up in areas without the rooftop density and household income to support them. The fact that one of the best — The Goose — sits directly inside 85250's McCormick Ranch area says something real about this part of Scottsdale.
If you want to actually experience the neighborhood before deciding to buy here, I'm happy to put together an itinerary that includes a stop at The Goose.
